No, unlike other Swiss cantons, personal liability insurance and household contents insurance are not legally compulsory in Geneva. Almost all Geneva landlords and property management companies do, however, require them when the lease is signed. In addition, in the event of water damage or fire, you are 100% financially liable: without insurance, the cost of repairs is entirely yours to bear.
Under-insurance arises when the declared value of your possessions is lower than their actual new-for-old replacement value. In the event of a major claim, the insurer may reduce your compensation in proportion to that shortfall. To avoid it, you should regularly reassess your furniture, appliances and equipment, particularly when moving house, moving in with a partner or buying valuable items.
Private legal expenses insurance covers the defence of your interests in everyday disputes: conflicts with an employer (employment law), disagreements with a landlord or a neighbour, disputes over online purchases or challenges to decisions by other insurers. It covers expert legal advice, attempts at mediation and the full cost of lawyers' fees and court costs.
Taking out your legal expenses insurance with a specialist, independent company rules out any conflict of interest. Should you enter into a dispute with your own motor or health insurer, independent legal expenses insurance will defend your rights neutrally and objectively, with no risk of cover being refused because of an arrangement between subsidiaries.
